So for those of you who have been following my writing journey, thank you! It has been a hell of a ride so far.
When I was just getting started, I posted the first four chapters of my work in progress as I wrote them. After a while, I hit a road
block with my novel. I was trying to rush the story, and it eventually started to crumble. I can become demotivated very easily, so it took a lot for me to continue to write, even if I wasn't thrilled with what landed on the page.
My novel began as a coming of age, young adult story. The protagonist, Silvia, was 16 years old and had just moved with her mother from Connecticut to Georgia. Silvia, not very well liked at her old school, was anxious to start over. However, though she was used to being a loner, she wanted more from this second chance at youth. On a whim, she dyes her hair galaxy blue. The next day, an envelope is stuffed into her locker, and her adventure begins. The letters starting coming every day, and with them, a new challenge for Silvia aka "Blue." This shined a light on her alter ego, and Silvia became trapped in a quest to find herself.
Sounds interesting enough, or so I thought. However, I had a hard time piecing together the overall goal for the book. Perhaps, it would have come to me in time, but for now, I chose to step away from this story. Part of what I felt wasn't working, was the fact that I had zero plan going into writing. I had always wanted to write a novel, and so I thought I could just plunk one out of me. I tend to go with the flow, so my discipline can be lacking. This is not a great trait to have if I want to actually finish a novel. Which I do.
Luckily, I'm taking part in Camp NaNoWriMo right now, and I have a new story I'm working on. For those of you who were intrigued by Silvia's story, have no fear, she's back! For this new story, Silvia is 18 years old and a freshman in college. The Stories of Silvia Silverman excerpts were written in first person. I'm leaning toward first person for this WIP as well. Silvia still has her blue hair, but her family dynamic has changed a bit. She's still the anxious girl from SSS, and this is a trait that she begins to question in her new journey. There's a reason for Silvia's anxiety and paranoia. But I can't give away too much. If you fell in love with Dennis while reading SSS, he has also made a return in my new story. Lastly, this story will have elements of fantasy, which ties into Silvia's personality. This story has the potential to be told over multiple books, possibly a trilogy. At least, that's what I'm working towards.
Oh, and if Silvia receiving those letters in SSS made you nervous, they made a comeback in my new story. Of course, there's a twist. This time, she doesn't know who's sending them. And whoever it is, is watching her every move.
So, bear with me and keep encouraging me to get this story written! Thank you to every one who has read SSS and gave me notes. They will without a doubt, still be valuable while I embark on this new journey of writing fantasy!
