The Reality
I absolutely hate when I fail to meet my goals. Unfortunately, that's exactly what happened this week. At least as far as Camp NaNoWriMo is concerned.
It feels as though this month is flying by and I'm barely chipping away at my word count goals for my novel. However, I did manage to accomplish things this week concerning my writing career. I started applying to grad schools! I've been playing around with the idea for the last month or two, and I finally decided to request information this week. Several schools contacted me immediately to begin the process, so I began applying to a short list.
With work, my sisters visiting, and grad school apps, I came up short of my Camp goals. But that's not to say that I didn't write at all. So how did I do?
Week 2 Stats
During week 1, I wrote 2,979 words. My suggested daily goal for this week was 484 words. But you already know that didn't happen!
My total word count is now at 3,961 words. Just shy of 1,000 words for the week and a little over 200 words per day. Honestly, I'm not mad about it. Sometimes life gets in the way and that's okay!
If I were to continue at this rate, I wouldn't hit 15,000 words until September 3rd. This week was a minor setback. An exception, not the rule.
I know I have to kick it up a notch for the last two weeks of Camp. So what's my plan of attack?
My Goals for Week 3
15,000 - 3,961 = 11,039
I have two weeks to write a little over 11,000 words. According to Camp NaNo, I have to write 736 words per day to finish on time.
Since I have to set my goals a little higher for the next two weeks, I'm going to aim for 750-800 words per day. Hopefully by my Week 3 report I'll have an extra 5,250 words added. Wish me luck (I'll need it!).
During this process I've realized a lot about how I write. Some days I'll only have 30 minutes to spend on my novel and others I have several hours. When I have a shorter amount of time, I'll do sprints. When I have more time, that doesn't necessarily make me more productive. I split my "extra" time between research, planning, and then writing. So all in all, I could have the same amount written despite varying time allotments. Knowing this has helped me to focus less on the amount on the page and more on the quality of what is written.
